The novel, and its subsequent anime adaptation, follows the story of Alisa Mikhailovna Kujo (nicknamed “Alya”), a beautiful mixed-race girl with a Russian father and a Japanese mother. Alya often expresses her true feelings in Russian when she is angry or shy, believing that her classmates do not understand the language. However, her classmate Masayika Kuze, who sits next to her and understands Russian, hears everything clearly.
