Girls’ Frontline is closing in China? End of Service announcement

Weird, but not so much. Developer Mica Team has announced the suspension of Girls’ Frontline service on its original Chinese server, effective December 31, 2024. This decision follows a breakdown in contract renewal negotiations with publisher Chengdu Digital Sky Technology, a partnership that spanned over eight years since the game’s launch in May 2016. While this suspension impacts only the Chinese server, Mica Team assures players of their commitment to reviving Girls’ Frontline in a new form, promising continuity of player progress whenever service resumes.

The initial announcement sparked concern, but a recent update on Girls’ Frontline’s Global Discord clarified the suspension as “temporary,” with potential plans to reintroduce the game. To ease the transition, Mica has promised that Chinese players will receive compensation in Girls’ Frontline 2, and premium items from the original title will transfer to the new game. Meanwhile, non-Chinese servers, including the Global version, will operate unaffected by these changes.

Now, this may sound a little strange because Girls’ Frontline 2 is just about to launch globally. And of course it is a bit of a concern because China is a large, the main, source of monetary income from these types of games. But if it’s just a license renewal, I hope good news will come soon and it won’t affect the global release.
