Final Fantasy XIV Mobile has announced its end of service in China, with servers scheduled to shut down on September 30, 2026, while plans for a global version have been officially canceled.
The announcement marks the conclusion of Square Enix’s attempt to adapt its flagship MMORPG into a mobile format. Developed in collaboration with Chinese publisher Shengqu Games, Final Fantasy XIV Mobile was envisioned as a streamlined experience that retained the core elements of the PC and console version while optimizing mechanics for smartphones. The project had been in development for several years, aiming to bring the sprawling world of Eorzea to a wider audience through mobile accessibility.
Despite the strong brand recognition and initial excitement, the mobile adaptation faced challenges in balancing MMORPG depth with mobile convenience. Previews suggested that the game would feature familiar classes, dungeons, and story arcs, but with adjustments to fit shorter play sessions and touch-based controls. However, delays, limited updates, and concerns about monetization models contributed to waning interest. The end of service reflects Square Enix’s shifting priorities in the mobile market, where sustaining large-scale MMORPGs has proven increasingly difficult.
The shutdown applies specifically to China, where the game was available. The cancellation of the global version means that players outside China will not see a release, closing the door on what could have been one of the most ambitious mobile MMORPG adaptations to date.
